IN A CELEBRATION OF THE RESTORATIVE POWER OF LITERACY,

WHEN YOU HEAR MY VOICE

AN ORIGINAL PIECE OF THEATRE
INVOLVING SHAKESPEARE & OTHER MOTIVATIONAL FORCES,
GLOBAL YOUNG OFFENDER WRITING,
16 ORIGINAL SONGS BY FIVE BRITISH COMPOSERS
AND TWO ELIZABETHAN PAVANES (DANCES).

ALL WILL BE PERFORMED BY
A COLLECTION OF YOUNG OFFENDERS (18-21) FROM
THE CORRADINO CORRECTIONAL FACILITY’S (CCF)
YOUNG OFFENDERS DIVISION (YOURS)
IN TANDEM WITH WEST END VETERANS
AND FOUR TALENTED MALTESE YOUTHS.

On 22 September 2011, Dr. Bruce Wall (Executive Director and Co-Founder with Dame Dorothy Tutin of the London Shakespeare Workout) ran a drama workshop with a selection of young offenders at the Corradino Correctional Facility’s (CCF) Young Offenders Unit (YOURS).  Within an hour CCF’s Director of Operations, Joanne Battistino wrote:  “It was indeed an honour and a great pleasure to have you deliver a taste of what drama in prisons can achieve.”  Inspired by the YOURS lads as much as by Ms. Battistino, Dr. Wall immediately began developing the project now known as WHEN YOU HEAR MY VOICE.

Utilising Shakespeare as a springboard towards effective interaction, the four performances of WHEN YOU HEAR MY VOICE at the ST. JAMES CAVALIER THEATRE, (St. James Cavalier Centre for Creativity, Pjazza Kastilja, Valletta, VLT 1060; 6 to 9 February 2012 at 7.30 pm) will feature not only segments from the Bard and other major dramatic writers/thinkers through time (ranging from Elizabeth I to Noel Coward; from Anne Boleyn to Tennessee Williams) but will additionally focus on global original young offender writing (as inspired by Shakespeare and authored in LSW sessions in locations ranging from Chile to China; from Uganda to Malta), 16 original song compositions by five award-winning British composers (Craig Adams, Christopher Hamilton, David Hewson, Stephan Hodel and Gareth Peter-Dicks) and two Elizabethan dances known as ‘pavanes’.  WHEN YOU HEAR MY VOICE’s title song can be heard here

WHEN YOU HEAR MY VOICE, will be performed in large part by a multi-national collection of CCF/YOURS Division young offenders.  They have, themselves, already created the opening sequence.  All will celebrate Shakespeare’s dictum:  ‘Don’t make your thoughts your prisons’The lads will be seen murdering Cinna the poet only because a crowd's mentality exhorts them to‘Tear him for his bad verses’  A young soldier will fight back emotion as he tries to warn Cleopatra of her imminent conquest.  ‘I do feel a grief that smites my very heart at root’An incarcerated royal son, Arthur, will face his mother, Queen Constance, in a prison visit.  ‘You are a spirit I know.  When did you die?’  Dramatic fare will face issues ranging from war to parenting in both text and song.  The entire creative process will be recorded as part of a documentary for global distribution made by the noted film maker, Natasha Serlin on how literacy itself can enhance and enable restoration.  That film alongside another documentary on Shakespeare, Muse of Fire, will premiere at the St. James Cavalier Cinema on both 30 April and 1 May 2012 in front of the President of Malta himself.  Proceeds from both undertakings will, in part, seed future arts incentives for the CCF/YOURS Division young offenders.

Joining the young offenders in the performing team, will be a group of key British theatricals including two noted Musical Directors and the singing actress, Laura Pitt-Pulford, hailed for her recent West End performances as Betty in Lord Andrew Lloyd Webber’s revival of SUNSET BOULEVARD and the 2011 London revival of PARADE (‘The real star of the show is Laura Pitt-Pulford.  Her tragic turns are made all the more touching by her spectacular voice which is responsible for the success of the play’s most effective numbers.’)  Click here to hear Ms. Pitt-Pulford sing one of the sixteen original songs to be included in WHEN YOU HEAR MY VOICE.   Additionally appearing under Dr. Wall’s direction will be four very talented young Maltese performers,  Andre Agius, Luke Farrugia, Alexander Gatesy-Lewis and Joseph Zammit.
